April 4, 2005, Union, NJ - The New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research (NJABR) has announced the formation of a state legislative biomedical research caucus. The bi-partisan caucus will be co-chaired by Assemblyman John McKeon (D-27) and Senator Ellen Karcher (D-12), and will focus on legislative measures that will strengthen New Jersey's position as the country's biomedical research leader.
"New Jersey is in an enviable position as the center of the global pharmaceutical industry, with a thriving biotech community presence here as well," said Assemblyman McKeon. "But competition for researchers and research funding is intense, and we cannot be complacent if we are to maintain our leadership position."
Senator Karcher agreed, noting the need to create a climate that supports research. "We want the cures for Alzheimer's disease and diabetes and Parkinson's disease to come from New Jersey, and we want our children to build their research careers right here in New Jersey. And we want our economy to thrive while we promote the world-class research done here in our state.'
Members of the Biomedical Research Caucus are Assembly members Neil Cohen (D-20), Christopher "Kip" Bateman (R-16), and Senator Robert Singer (R-30).
Jayne Mackta, NJABR president, said that the Caucus' priorities would include increased state and federal funding for biomedical research in New Jersey, increased clinical trials and greater public participation in the trials, and greater cohesiveness in the biomedical community.
The New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research is the only organization in New Jersey dedicated solely to promoting the improvement of human and animal health through biomedical research. Its membership includes academic institutions, industry, hospitals, voluntary health organizations, and affiliated trade and professional organizations.
