Yu-Ying Liu, Ph.D.

Senior Research Leader, Isotope Synthesis Group Hoffmann-La Roche Inc.

Yu-Ying Liu, Ph.D.

"An important aspect in drug development is the evaluation of drug safety. To better understand the mechanism of action, the toxicity of the drug, how the drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized and eliminated, many studies need to be conducted, which can be facilitated by the use of isotopically labeled compounds. These research results provide the information necessary to design human clinical trials. It would be impossible to gain knowledge of how the human body responds to a new drug without these investigations."

As head of the isotope synthesis group, Dr. Liu, who recently celebrated her 30th anniversary at Roche, focuses on the synthesis of isotopically labeled materials for use in a variety of drug discovery and drug development studies. Highly valued for her laboratory, leadership and mentoring skills, she is also a key member of a high performing and interactive Chemical Synthesis management team, working diligently to meet the material requirements and deadlines of the department's and group's customers.

Dr. Liu received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. A knowledgeable isotope synthesis chemist, she ensures that all deadlines are met and that all operations are in compliance with FDA, NRC, environmental, industrial hygiene and safety regulations.
