Ambassador For Scientific Research: Patricia Andrade-Gordon, Ph.D.

Vice President-Spring House, Drug Discovery-Biology
Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development

Dr. Patricia Andrade-Gordon was born in Cali, Colombia, South America. She earned B.A. degrees in chemistry and Spanish literature from Barnard College at Columbia University in New York and obtained her Ph.D. degree in Molecular Pharmacology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where she was a recipient of a pre-doctoral NIH award.

After postdoctoral studies at Stony Brook, Patricia joined the faculty at Yale University, School of Medicine in New Haven, CT, as an Assistant Professor, working mainly on ovulation as a regulated thrombosis process. She moved to Pennsylvania in 1991 and joined Johnson & Johnson at the R. W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute to organize a productive Drug Discovery program in antithrombotic research.

During her tenure with Johnson & Johnson, Patricia has made significant contributions in diverse research areas. Her laboratory was the first to initiate a high-throughput screen (HTS) and her expertise in this area was utilized to help implement HTS broadly within Drug Discovery. Her research activities led to the identification of a series of novel fibrinogen receptor antagonists and thrombin inhibitors with promise for the therapy of thrombotic disorders. In addition, her laboratory has identified unique protease- activated receptors with potential for significant physiological roles.

An internationally known researcher, Patricia has published more than 100 scientific papers, is an inventor of 12 U.S. Patents, has lectured at numerous universities and international conferences, served as reviewer for several international scientific journals, and was appointed Chairman of the 1999 FASEB Summer Research Conference on Vascular Medicine. She has receceived many awards, including the Johnson & Johnson Excellence in Science Award, the R. W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute Achievement Award for the Discovery of RWJ-53308, a potent antiplatelet agent, the Johnson & Johnson Image Award for the Innovative Application of High Throughput Screening, and the Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) Award recognizing women who have excelled in their fields and made significant contributions to industry.

Patricia met her husband, David A. Gordon at Stony Brook. They married in 1982 and have two daughters, Andrea, 18, and Alexandra, 12.
