My Pet

by Jason Halpern, Grade 7
Lewis. F. Cole Middle School, Fort Lee

I kicked, I screamed, I ranted, I raved,
For the pet I always craved.

It was on a beautiful February day that my parents finally gave in,
It was a little hamster that I eventually would win.

Off to the pet store - that is where we went,
To shop for the most exquisite rodent.

After I got the hamster my heart was filled with joy,
I treated her like my favorite toy.

My hamster was soft, cuddly, and its fur was light brown,
She was so much fun to play with, I could never put it down.

I cleaned the cage every week,
Mainly because I didn't want anything to leak.

She ate carrots and lettuce and drank lots of water,
There really was not much that I could have taught her.

Since she was nocturnal she would exercise at night,
That kept me up and it was something I had to fight.

Five months later, on a warm July day,
I couldn't believe it, there was no way!

She lay so still in the corner of the cage,
I stared and stared and became filled with rage.

Heaven is the place where she does rest,
She was my first pet and it was the best.
