My Pet

by Jonah Velasco, Grade 8
Cordero Middle School, Jersey City

My sister was the one who named
The lovebirds I once claimed
JoJo and Chi-Chi were their names
And they were always included in
My childish games.

They were a present for my birthday.
Their colors were gold and gray.
But one sad day,
Chi-Chi flew away.

Wouldn't you think the birds that fly
would lose their way in all that sky?
I took JoJo in my hands,
bent down and whispered my demands.

No need to bring Chi-Chi back
Just go and follow her track,
Her golden feathers,
And be happy together.
