Green Eyes

By Taryn Claus - Grade 7
Waldwick Junior School, Waldwick

Silently
Silently
Padding through the forest
Is where the king of India lives.
A powerful paw smashes leaves under foot
While remaining silent to weary ears
Deer, unsuspecting, standing nearby
Resting, feeding, being hunted.

The gift of invisibility shields the king-
From any prying eyes among the trees
Then he stops and crouches on his haunches
His green eyes piercing the undergrowth.
Claws unsheathed like swords
His tail, so many bands of black,
Moves back and forth, to and fro
Then his strategy starts, with a pounce.

Like a ghost among the ferns and thorns
The king dashes with speed unmatched
Upon the weary prey
Now his proud meal, a job well done.
Such beauty has the green-eyed king
Lying in all his royal solitude
That's what I wish I could be
The green-eyed ruler, the tiger...
