The Call of the Wild

By Matt Consolloy
New Egypt Middle School

Howling is their calling card
Oath to the pack is their way
Wolves protect and stand guard
Looking after their pups who like to play

Highly sociable animals that live in groups called packs
Out on the prowl to hunt their prey
When their prey is in sight, the wolf attacks
Looking out for moose or deer, for a meal for the day

Howling can be a warning or an invitation
Otherwise known as the call of the wild
White, black, or gray is their coloration
Living in the artic they prefer the snow to the mild

Home is northern forests and tundra lands
Officially known as the beloved symbol of the wilderness
With four strong, fast legs the wolf stands
Life for wolves can be dangerous, but wolves are brave and fearless

How it survives is on the young, old and weak
Others know to stay away, because their territory is marked by scent
Wandering through the forest, they are sly and sleek
Looking at them on mountain tops, watching them as they decent

How they stay warm is their fur and that's soft and thick
Once its gripped its prey, it's brought down by its fierce bite
With their long legs and large feet they run very quick
Lit by the moonlight, they usually hunt at night

Howling is the way they speak
Observed as playful through the eyes of a child
Watch out for them on the mountain peak
Listen out for the call of the wild
